Mo'ne Davis picked 10th overall in Women's Pro Baseball League draft, Kelsie Whitmore goes first overall

More than a decade after reaching viral stardom in the Little League World Series, Mo'ne Davis about to start playing baseball again. Now 24 years old, Davis was the 10th overall pick of the Women's Pro Baseball League's inaugural player draft on Thursday, going to the Los Angeles team.

The first overall pick was another trailblazer in Kelsie Whitmore, who has made appearances in multiple independent baseball leagues and appeared with the Savannah Bananas this year.

In total, 120 players were selected across the four teams.

Davis remains one of the biggest names in Little League history. At age 13, she became the first girl to win a game in LLWS history, posting an eight-strikeout, two-hit shutout against a Nashville team that included a future MLB player in Robert Hassell III.Davis and Hassell recently reunited for a first pitch at Nationals Park, where Hassell now plays.

Since then, Davis has released a memoir, played softball at Hampton University and graduated from Columbia University with a master's in sports management. But she's now making a return to baseballafter taking part in the WPBL's tryouts in August.

Rather than pitcher, however, Davis was selected as a center fielder.

The tryouts are the first women's professional baseball tryouts to be held in over 80 years since the All American Girls Professional Baseball League in 1943. Speaking to 6abc Philadelphia, she alluded to some arm issues that may impact her ability to stay on the field, but expressed gratitude for the emergence of a women's professional baseball league:

"It was a shock, I didn't think I was going to go that early, just because my arm is a little messed up ... It's the next chapter of my life. Especially over the years, focusing on school, not knowing what's next and then having this league come up at the perfect time. It feels great."

What is the Women's Pro Baseball League?

An awkward part of the modern baseball landscape is that while softball is often treated as the other side of the coin between genders, it is a different sport. And quite a few of the girls who grew up playing baseball would like to keep playing baseball rather than shift to softball, the sport sanctioned by the NCAA.

The WPBL is intended to offer those girls and women a chance to continue playing baseball. The leaguewas officially founded in 2024by Justine Siegal, the first woman to coach professional men's baseball in the U.S. when she joined the Oakland Athletics organization in 2015, and Keith Stein, the owner of the Intercounty Baseball League's Toronto Maple Leafs.

Siegal's founding statement:

"I am so excited that there will finally be a professional women's baseball league. It is a dream come true for all the girls and women who play America's pastime.

"The Women's Pro Baseball League is here for all the girls and women who dream of a place to showcase their talents and play the game they love. We have been waiting over 70 years for a professional baseball league we can call our own. Our time is now."

The league's structure breaks down into 15-player rosters for four teams:Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Boston. While geographically distant, those teams willmostly play in only one location at Robin Roberts Stadium at Springfield, Illinois, with some barnstorming games for the teams' namesakes still being organized.

PerFront Office Sports' Annie Costabile, the league drew nearly $3 million in Series A funding after initially planning to raise only $2 million.

Play will commence with a four-week regular season and two-week postseason in 2026, with two seven-inning games per week. Teams will have a $95,000 salary cap and will cover living costs for the players, who will reportedly receive a percentage of sponsor money as well.

The league also plans to expand to six teams in 2027.

Kurashev scores only goal of shootout, Sharks beat the Kings 4-3

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Philipp Kurashev scored in regulation and the only goal of a shootout, and the San Jose Sharks held on for a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night.

San Jose's first player in the shootout, Kurashev skated toward his left then shifted direction toward the net before flipping the puck over the left shoulder of Kings goalie Anton Forsberg. Kurashev also had a goal in the second period.

Ty Dellandrea had a goal and an assist for San Jose. Adam Gaudette scored a goal, while Collin Graf had two assists. Yaroslav Askarov made 31 saves, two during the shootout.

Joel Armia, Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe had goals for the Kings.

Gaudette got the Sharks going with a goal on San Jose's first shot of the game 2:33 into the first period. Gaudette raced in from the blue line and took a pass from Dellandrea then fired a wrist shot into the lower left corner of the net.

After the Kings tied it on Armia's short-handed and unassisted goal late in the period, San Jose regained the lead when Collin Graf skated around behind the net then flipped to Dellandrea in front of the net for a 2-1 lead with 9.9 seconds remaining.

Los Angeles responded quickly with a tying goal less than two minutes into the second period when Kopitar slid the puck through the legs of Askarov. Trevor Moore and Cody Ceci had assists.

After the Kings had a goal nullified by an offside penalty midway through the second period, Kurashev's sixth goal of the season gave the Sharks a 3-2 lead.

Kempe forced overtime with his seventh goal of the season with 59 seconds remaining in regulation.

Kings: Face the Bruins on Friday night.

Sharks: Play the Senators on Saturday night.

Josh Allen throws interception in final seconds to seal Bills' 23-19 loss to Texans

HOUSTON (AP) — Little went right for Josh Allen in a frustrating game Thursday night against the Houston Texans.

And still he came close to willing the Buffalo Bills to a victory before an interception in the final minute sealed their fatein a 23-19 loss.

Allen took consecutive sacks on the Bills' final possession, leading to a fourth-and-27, but Buffalo (7-4) gained 44 yards on a short pass from Allen to Josh Palmer, who tossed a lateral to Khalil Shakir.

After a false-start penalty created a fourth-and-6 for Buffalo (7-4), Calen Bullock picked off Allen's pass at the Houston 9 with 24 seconds left.

"We had a chance to win it there at the end," Allen said. "We did a good job of staying in it and our defense bailed us out a couple of times. We've got to find a way, and we didn't."

It was tough for Allen to get anything going on a night he was sacked a career-high eight times and hit four other times. Allen threw for 253 yards with two interceptions and no touchdowns after accounting for six touchdowns in a win over Tampa Bay last week.

"When they hit our quarterback 12 times, I don't like that," Bills coach Sean McDermott said. "I don't like that stat at all. It's just not a healthy way to play and it's not a good way to keep our quarterback healthy for the rest of the season. We've got to play better."

Allen was slow to get up after a sack in the first half. He said he was OK and that his left shoulder "went a little numb" after he landed on it awkwardly. He was asked about being hit so many times on Thursday.

"It's not fun," he said. "I ran into a couple myself. I've got to be better at throwing the ball away. Too many times, I was going backwards."

Allen lost 70 yards on the eight sacks. Will Anderson Jr. had 2 1/2 sacks to lead the Texans. His second one came when he almost took Allen down near the line of scrimmage, but he wriggled away and Anderson got up and chased him across the field to drop him for an 18-yard loss to force a punt early in the third.

The Bills played for a second straight game without receiver Keon Coleman after he was again a healthy scratch after he was late to a team meeting before their last game. He was previously benched for the first series of a loss to New England in Week 5 after also being late for a meeting.

"Nothing new. We're just taking it one day at a time," McDermott said. "I thought he had a better week, but we're taking it one day at a time. It wasn't that it wasn't thought about, but we went with the guys that give us the best chance."

Shakir led the Bills with eight receptions for 110 yards and James Cook had 116 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Allen was disappointed that the Bills couldn't make plays down the stretch.

"Ultimately, we've got to execute, and we didn't do a good job of that tonight," he said. "Whatever situation and whatever circumstance, we've got to find a way, and we didn't."

Archaeologists lift the lid on a 1,700-year-old Roman sarcophagus hidden beneath Budapest

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — A remarkably well-preserved Roman sarcophagus has been unearthed in Hungary's capital, offering a rare window into the life of the young woman inside and the world she inhabited around 1,700 years ago.

Archaeologists with the Budapest History Museum discovered the limestone coffin during a large-scale excavation in Óbuda, a northern district of the city that once formed part of Aquincum, a bustling Roman settlement on the Danube frontier.

Untouched by looters and sealed for centuries, the sarcophagus was found with its stone lid still fixed in place, secured by metal clamps and molten lead. When researchers carefully lifted the lid, they uncovered a complete skeleton surrounded by dozens of artifacts.

"The peculiarity of the finding is that it was a hermetically sealed sarcophagus. It was not disturbed previously, so it was intact," said Gabriella Fényes, the excavation's lead archaeologist.

The coffin lay among the ruins of abandoned houses in a quarter of Aquincum vacated in the 3rd century and later repurposed as a burial ground. Nearby, researchers uncovered a Roman aqueduct and eight simpler graves, but none approaching the richness or pristine condition of the sealed tomb.

Keeping with Roman funerary customs, the sarcophagus held an array of objects: two completely intact glass vessels, bronze figures and 140 coins. A bone hair pin, a piece of amber jewelry and traces of gold-threaded fabric, along with the size of the skeleton, point to the grave belonging to a young woman.

The objects, Fényes said, were "items given to the deceased by her relatives for her eternal journey."

"The deceased was buried very carefully by her relatives. They must have really loved who they buried here," she said.

During the Roman period, much of what is now Hungary formed the province of Pannonia, whose frontier ran along the right bank of the Danube River less than a mile (1.6 kilometers) from the site. A short distance away stood a legionary camp guarding the empire's border, and the newly found structures are believed to have been part of the civilian settlement that grew around it.

Anthropologists will now examine the young woman's remains, a process expected to reveal more about her age, health and origins. But even now, the grave's placement and abundance of artifacts offer strong clues.

The sarcophagus and its contents "definitely make it stand out," said Gergely Kostyál, a Roman-period specialist and coleader of the project. "This probably means that the deceased was well-to-do or of a higher social status."

"It is truly rare to find a sarcophagus like this, untouched and never used before, because in the fourth century it was common to reuse earlier sarcophagi," he added. "It is quite clear that this sarcophagus was made specifically for the deceased."

Excavators also removed a layer of mud roughly 4 centimeters (1.5 inches) thick from inside the coffin that Fényes hopes could contain more treasures.

"I suspect we could find jewelry. We haven't found any earrings or other jewelry belonging to the woman, so I hope that these small items will turn up during the sifting of the mud," she said.

For Fényes, the discovery of the Roman sarcophagus is not only of scientific significance, but an emotionally resonant insight into the devotion displayed by people in an ancient time.

"I was very touched by the care and expression of love that we were able to get a glimpse of," she said. "Even now, I shudder to think how painful it must have been for the people at that time to bury this young lady."

Japan OKs $135 billion stimulus package to help revive its sluggish economy

TOKYO (AP) — Japan's Cabinet approved a 21.3 trillion yen ($135.4 billion) stimulus package Friday to help spur the economy through expansionary government spending and to relieve the impact of higher prices.

After taking office last month, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi promised to boost government spending despite concerns that such moves will delay progress on trimming Japan's national debt, which is about triple the size of its economy.

Takaichi told reporters that the package aims to quickly deliver on her promises.

"Through wise spending, we will change worries into hope and achieve a strong economy," she said.

"What we should do now is to strengthen the national power through expansionary spending, through wise spending, and not to cause harm through excessively contractionary policies," she said.

The spending package far exceeds those of the pre-COVID-19 pandemic years and is also meant partly to blunt the impact of higher U.S. tariffs onJapanese exportsto America underPresident Donald Trump.

Exports to the U.S. fell in October for the seventh straight month, the government said Friday, though shipments to the rest of the world rose 3.7%, thanks partly to higher exports to the rest of Asia.

In recent days, investors have sold off Japanese government bonds, pushing yields higher, while the yen has fallen to nearly its lowest level this year.

Share prices have also taken a hit from renewed friction with China after Takaichi made comments that angered Beijing, provoking retaliatory moves including an advisory warning Chinese tourists and students against going to Japan.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index fell 2.4% on Friday, mainly due to heavy selling of technology shares.

The lavish spending package approved Friday includes subsidies for energy costs, a cut in the gasoline tax and other measures to help consumers struggling with the rising cost of living. The government reported Friday that core inflation excluding volatile food costs was 3% in October, higher than the central bank's target of around 2%.

Specific subsidies include one-time cash handouts of 20,000 yen (about $130) per child, which would require about 400 billion yen ($2.6 billion) in government funding and issuing rice vouchers or other coupons worth 3,000 yen (about $20) per person, to be distributed by local authorities.

Takaichi's government must compile a supplementary budget and gain approval by the parliament by the end of this year to fund the package. That's a major challenge for her ruling coalition, which lacks a majority in both the Upper and Lower houses of the Diet.

Takaichi succeeded former Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who was virtually ousted by his rivals in the ruling party after losing major elections due to voter dissatisfaction over his minority government's slow response to soaring prices and lagging wages.

As Japan'sfirst female prime minister,Takaichi has so far enjoyed high levels of public support largely because of expectations she might shake up Japan's gerontocratic politics. But since she has a minority government, she needs cooperation with opposition parties to get her supplementary budget and spending package passed.

Opposition lawmakers and experts have questioned whether the package will be effective in attaining its aims. One of which is to slightly lower consumer prices by cutting energy costs. Any impact on inflation is expected to be transient since increased demand from other stimulus would tend to push prices higher.

The package also is meant to raise Japan's gross domestic product by 24 trillion yen ($155 billion), or an annualized rate of 1.4%, according to the Cabinet Office.

Japan's economy, the world's fourth largest, contracted at a 1.8% annual pace in July-September.

European arms makers fall to lowest since September on Ukraine peace push

(Reuters) -European defence shares fell to their lowest levels since early September on Friday, after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he ‌was ready for "honest" work on a U.S.-‌backed plan to end the war.

An index of aerospace and defence companies was last down 2.6%.

The index, which has risen more than 200% since Russia launched its war against Ukraine ‌in February 2022, was heading for its biggest weekly losses since mid-October.

Shares in Germany'‍s Renk fell around 6%, on track for a sixth straight day of losses.

Hensoldt and Rheinmetall were both down around 4%.

Italy's Leonardo, Sweden's Saab slipped between ‌around 2% and 3%.

JPMorgan analysts wrote in a note earlier this week they saw the plan as not acceptable to Ukraine or its European allies, and viewed the recent selloff in defence companies as a "compelling entry point" into the sector.

"If the U.S. is able to impose this plan (which is unlikely, in our view) we think ‍it would amount to a de facto victory for Russia, driving European defence spending even higher than planned and at a much faster pace," they wrote. ‌
