Family of imprisoned Chinese journalist pleads for his release over health concerns

BANGKOK (AP) — Family members and activists have called for the release of imprisoned Chinese journalist Dong Yuyu due to health concerns.

Associated Press

Dong, an editor at a major state-owned newspaper, the Guangming Daily, was taken away while meeting a Japanese diplomat for lunch in 2022 and wassentenced to seven years in prisonfor espionage in 2024.

“Yuyu is now effectively facing a death sentence,” the family said in a statement Thursday.

Dong was hospitalized at a prison-affiliated hospital in Tianjin on April 27, according to his family. Doctors there found heart arrhythmia and a lung tumor his family feared was malignant.

He had been working long hours while in prison making clothes, and has not been able to rest properly, his family said.

“My mother and I are very sad and anxious,” said Dong Yifu, the son, who has been advocating for his father's release, and is based in the U.S.

“The international community must increase pressure on Beijing to secure his release on medical parole, as well as permission for him to travel abroad for treatment and reunite with his family," said Aleksandra Bielakowska, an activist with Reporters Without Borders, in a statement.

The family is hoping that his case will be raised by U.S. President Donald Trump’s team at the summit with China’s President Xi Jinping next week.

Dong had worked for the state-backed Guangming Daily, based in Beijing, but also written for other publications, including Chinese magazines and The New York Times’ Chinese-language website.

Dong wrote articlesarguing for constitutional democracy, political reform and transparency in politics — views allowed to circulate freely in the past that are now taboo in China.

PGA Championship: Why CBS analysts don't expect an underdog to win

The 108thPGA Championshipwill be May 14-17 at the Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pa., 20 miles from the statue of Rocky Balboa in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

USA TODAY

But the CBS announcing crew for the tournament isn't sure there will be an underdog story in the season’s second major to match Rocky, the fictional boxer who came from obscurity to become the heavyweight champion of the world.

Not when world No. 1 and defending PGA champion Scottie Scheffler, Masters champion Rory McIlroy, Players champion Cameron Young, three-time 2026 winnerMatt Fitzpatrickand Farmers Insurance winner and the champion the last time a major was held near Philadelphia,Justin Rose(at the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion), are coming into the week seemingly at the top of their games.

"I don't see it, personally," said lead CBS analyst Trevor Immelman on a videoconference on May 5. "The top five, six, seven ... maybe even you can go 10 players in the world are in such nice form that I see it coming from one of those guys."

Jim Nantz, who will be the anchor for the 36th consecutive time CBS has aired the PGA and the 43rd time overall, pulled out his Masters pick, Chris Gotterup.

But can a four-time PGA Tour winner really be considered an underdog?

Same for lead on-course reporter Dottie Pepper. She touted the possibility of Keegan Bradley winning, but he's a past PGA champion and has won eight times on the PGA Tour.

Cameron Young tees off on the 17th hole during the fourth round of The Players Championship PGA golf tournament at TPC Sawgrass, Sunday, March 15, 2026, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Cameron Young won the tournament at 13 under par, one stroke over Matt Fitzpatrick.

In the end, the talent who will lead the CBS coverage seemed to converge on the fact that the cream will rise to the top come late Sunday afternoon at an old-school Donald Ross course and will play to a par of 70 and has enough twists and turns, hazardous bunkering and tricky greens complexes to favor the top shot-makers on the Tour.

Jim Nantz thinks Scottie Scheffler may prevail

Nantz pointed out the results of three recent events aired on CBS, the Masters, the RBC Heritage and last week's Cadillac Championship, and said Scheffler might be poised to get his breakout victory of the 2026 season.

"Four guys we're talking about, Rory, Scottie, Fitz and Cameron Young," Nantz said. "Those four go to Augusta, Rory finishes first, Scottie is second. Harbour Town Golf Links [RBC], Fitzpatrick's first, Scottie second. And then last week in Miami, you've got Cam Young winning and Scottie second.

Matt Fitzpatrick (left) is one of three players who have won golf tournaments since the Masters, with Scottie Scheffler (right) finishing second all three times.

"So it's been those four but the one constant has been Scottie," Nantz continued. "Scottie is going to come back and break through one of these days and get off the second-place train. This might be the perfect week. In my mind, if I go to the heavyweight division, I'll take Scottie."

CBS golf viewership has been strong

The golfers aren't the only ones bringing momentum to Aronimik. CBS is coming off a Masters Tournament that included the most-watched final round in 11 years, peaking at over 20 million viewers. CBS broadcasts of the PGA Tour are up 12 percent over 2025, off to the network's best start since 2015.

With technology enhancements such as a "dual array camera", and a lineup that includes Nantz, Immelman and Pepper, former Tour players Frank Nobilo, Colt Knost and Johnson Wagner, and veterans Andrew Catalon and Mark Immelman, CBS is "the best at what we do," said CBS Sports President David Berson.

"I cannot be happier with the chemistry of this team and their insightful and fun on-air presentation," Berson said on the videoconference. "It's been a great golf season so far."

First- and second-round broadcast coverage will be on ESPN from 12-7 p.m., then for another hour on ESPN2. Early coverage of the third and fourth rounds will be on ESPN from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and CBS will take over both days until the last putt.

Counting streaming coverage on ESPN+, there will be nearly 50 hours of live golf from May 14-17.

5-star Princeton guard Kameron Mercer gets Cincinnati Bearcats offer

On March 22, sophomore guard Kameron Mercer won an Ohio Division I state basketball title with his Princeton Vikings team in Dayton.

USA TODAY

A little over a month later, thefive-star prospecthas been offered by new University ofCincinnati Bearcatscoach Jerrod Calhoun. Mercerposted the news on his social media accounts May 5.

Technically, Mercer was first offered by the Bearcats in Oct. 2024 when he was a freshman at Huntington Expressions Prep in West Virginia. That offer came from the Wes Miller staff. Jerrod Calhoun's staff got him in for a visit and made the recent offer.

UC now joins the likes of Florida State, Georgia State, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina State, Ohio State, UCF, Villanova and Xavier in pursuing the 6-foot-5, 200-pound shooting guard.

Princeton's Kam Mercer drives to the basket during their Division I state championship win over Hilliard Bradley Sunday, March 22 at University of Dayton Arena. Mercer was offered by the Cincinnati Bearcats May 5.

After averaging 11 points, six rebounds and five assists playing older competition at Huntington, Mercer was originally headed to Overtime Elite in Atlanta but elected tocome back to Cincinnati to play for Bryan Wyant at Princeton High School.

The result was a 25-3 record with the sophomore scoring 14.2 points per game along with 5.4 rebounds per contest. He was third in the Greater Miami Conference in assists with 3.4 per game and second in steals at 2.4. The Vikings won their first boys' state basketball title.

Kameron Mercer's best outings for Princeton

On March 11, he had a 20-point, 10-rebound effort vs. Wayne and his season-high in scoring was 27 points against Colerain in January. He had two double-doubles during the season and came to close to a triple-double in a game vs. Lima Senior when he hauled down a season-best 14 rebounds to go along with seven points and seven assists.

Kameron Mercer wasn't alone in his visit toCincinnatiBearcats

In addition to his parents, Kameron's older brother Jaylen Mercer was on the visit and posed with him wearing a C-paw letterman's jacket.

Jaylen Merceris a 6-5, 260-pound edge rushernow at Princetonwho graduates in 2027 and is being hotly pursued by many programs, including several from the Big 12. The Bearcats have offered him as well, but he still has upcoming visits scheduled with Louisville and Kentucky.

Jaylen Mercer had 26 tackles, 1.5 sacks. 2.5 tackles for loss and a pair of fumble recoveries as a junior for 9-3 Winton Woods last season.

Blackhawk baseball's Carter Davis turns obstacles into opportunities

HOPEWELL TWP. — For someone like Carter Davis, a big 6-foot-2 right-handed pitcher who will be taking his talents to the University of Pittsburgh to pitch once he graduates, having his senior year on the mound cut short due to an early-season injury could be a lethal gut punch for many.

USA TODAY

But not Davis.

Instead of wallowing after an arm injury that shut the senior down on the mound and in the field one week into the season down in Florida, Davis is making the most of his opportunity and helping out where he can at the plate.

“This season has been a tough one for me, battling injuries,” Davis said. “I had to put that all behind me because everything happens for a reason. Those obstacles create opportunities and you have to make the most of everything.”

While Davis’ arm would certainly be welcomed with Blackhawk near the top of the section standings, the senior has done what he can to give the Cougars their best chance to win.

Throughout the 2026 campaign, Davis has been a force at the plate, as prior to Blackhawk’s section showdown against Hopewell on Monday, May 4, Davis has hit an even .500, collecting 21 hits, 15 RBIs, four doubles and four home runs.

The senior leads the Cougars in hits, RBIs and home runs, while ranking third on the team in doubles.

“I take things one pitch at a time and slow everything down around me,” Davis said. “If I hit the pitch, that’s great. If I don’t, I try to stay calm, not get too tense and focus on the next pitch.”

That calm demeanor, along with an intense work ethic, was something that caught longtime Blackhawk assistant and current head coach Lou Wolber’s eyes when Davis came up to the varsity program his sophomore year.

Once the coach saw the talent he had on his hands, he knew that Davis could play at the next level, especially after watching former Blackhawk standout and former Tampa Bay Rays southpaw Brendan McKay pitch during his high school career.

“Whenever he came up to us as a sophomore, his lively arm showed me right away that if he continued on that path and worked, he could play at the next level,” Wolber said. “He gets everyone going around him and is a joy to coach.”

Blackhawk designated hitter Carter Davis (2) watches his ball's flight during the WPIAL 4A Section I game between Blackhawk and Hopewell at Joe Colella Field, Monday, May 4, 2026 in Hopewell Township, Pa.

The leadership from Davis has helped pave the way for a Blackhawk roster to find success even without its ace on the mound.

Even with the high expectations Davis came into his senior campaign with, despite the setback of being shut down and not being able to hit the field, the senior has been a leader for the team, which is headed back to the postseason.

“For someone who has high expectations in his senior year of high school and was throwing well before the injury, having to keep your chin up after that is tough for someone that young,” Wolber said. “He has done a good job with the role he is in, taking it in stride and is a leader for the younger guys.”

With the playoffs now on the horizon and Blackhawk having a senior-heavy roster, for Davis, the sky is the limit for the team.

As the regular season comes to a close, Davis knows what’s at stake moving forward and knows that if he and his team continue to play the way that they have, Blackhawk can make a deep run.

“I am very excited to see what we can do as a team,” Davis said. “I believe that we have a shot to win it all. We are a strong group and if we keep playing together, we can make a run at it,”

Bessent urges China to step up diplomacy on Iran ahead of Trump-Xi summit

By David Lawder and Susan Heavey

Reuters

WASHINGTON, May 4 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday urged China to intensify its diplomatic efforts to persuade Iran to open ‌the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping, adding that President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi ‌Jinping will discuss the subject when they meet next week.

"China, let's see them step up with some diplomacy and get the Iranians to open the strait," Bessent said during a live interview on Fox News Channel's "America's Newsroom" program.

Bessent said that China was buying 90% of Iran's energy, "so they are funding the largest state sponsor of terrorism."

He urged China to "join us in this international operation" to open the strait but did not specify ‌what action Beijing should take. He added that China and Russia should stop blocking initiatives at the United Nations, such as a resolution encouraging steps to protect commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

China over the weekend escalated opposition to U.S sanctions against Chinese oil refineries over purchases of Iranian crude.

China's Ministry of Commerce ordered companies not to comply with U.S. sanctions against five independent refiners, including the recently designated Hengli Petrochemical, invoking for the first time a law that allows Beijing to retaliate against ‌entities enforcing sanctions it deems unlawful.

Bessent said Trump and Xi have been discussing Iran and will exchange views in person during their May 14 to 15 summit in Beijing. But he emphasized the two will strive to maintain the steady U.S.-China relationship established with their trade truce in October.

"We've had great stability in the relationship, and again, that comes from the two leaders having great respect for each ‌other," he said.

Bessent said the United States is fully in control of the Strait of Hormuz through its blockade of Iranian shipping and that the new U.S. Navy operation to guide shipping through the strategic waterway will bring oil ‌prices down. He called high fuel prices a "temporary aberration" that will end in a matter of weeks or months.

"Again, we are cognizant that this short-term blip up in prices is affecting the American people, but I am also confident on the other side of this, prices are going ‌to come down very quickly," Bessent said, adding that the oil market will be well-supplied.
