United Airlines flight from Newark to South Africa turns around over Atlantic after medical emergency

Passengers were in the air for more than eight hours, data shows.

A flight from Newark Liberty International Airport to South Africa was forced to turn around over the Atlantic Ocean early Monday when a passenger suffered a medical emergency, according to the airline.

The 236 passengers and 14 crew members onboard the Cape Town-bound United Airlines flight spent more than eight hours in the air before the plane landed back in New Jersey.

Medical personnel met the plane as soon as it touched down, a United Airlines rep told The Post. The passenger's condition was not immediately clear.

Data from the flight-tracking website FlightAware shows United Flight 1122 took off at 8:30 p.m. Sunday and turned around about four hours into the flight.

The plane landed back where it started just after 5 a.m., data show.

Customers were rebooked and sent on a different flight Monday, the airline said.
